Coaches' Clinic - 2008
On March 1, 2008 at SYC, the Sailing Foundation was host to a clinic led by long-time ISSA coach Roger Rawlings of The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT. Attendees included collegiate sailors, high school, community sailing and yacht club youth coaches and interested parties. All participants received a coaching manual including a team racing playbook. Topics included: Key points for understanding motivation from Rainer Martens’ book Successful Coaching, Hobart College coach Scott Inkle’s Team Building Methods, MIT coach Kyle Welch’s Starting From Scratch and Roy Williams’ Practicing Practicing. The playbook included coaching cross-pollination with UCLA basketball coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. Also included were practice schedules, drills, skills progression assessments, Team racing concepts and 420 and FJ speed and tuning tips. Ideas were shared in a question and answer format that took advantage of the collective knowledge in the room. A pizza feed on the docks, which included networking sessions that led to increased participation this high school sailing season, followed the clinic. What coach would not benefit from this kind ofopportunity?
