Coaches' Clinics

The Sailing Foundation coaching clinics help to improve coaching skills. Improved coaching helps sailors perform at higher levels more consistently. Consistent performance wins regattas or at least allows sailors to perform to their full potential and have more fun.

Are you ready for this season? In understanding motivation, do you know optimal arousal isn't just for consenting adults? Is lack of effort among your sailors simply due to lack of motivation? Do you understand what motivates your sailors? How many times last season did you talk about sailing achievement and self worth? Do you have a plan for building team harmony? Did you take the time to develop individual roles for all your sailors? How do these individual roles relate to shared team goals? Can you name the five phases of group development and what they mean to you and your sailors? Here's a hint: Forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. How well did you manage this process last season? Is this nothing new to you, or could you use some help? Sailing Foundation coaching clinics will help your program by making you a more effective coach and leader.

Are you an effective team racing coach? The most exciting form of sailing right now is three on three team racing. This form of competition conforms to the team-oriented norm in school athletics. Groups of sailors and boats work together as a team and are readily recognizable for spectators ashore by colored sails, ribbons or school colors over lifejackets. Less experienced sailors, even with inferior boatspeed, working together with well practiced boat handling and tactics can compete with faster more experienced sailors who fail to sail as a team.

Are you an effective team sailing coach? Can you recite the golden and platinum rules of team racing? Can you describe leverage and balance or identify the focus of the race? How many three boat weave drills did your team practice last year? When should you run a sucker play and what is the best defense for a high low? Where is the zone of death in a team start? When should you lead to the line and when should you follow or push? Do you know how to coach hooking or posting up? You get the idea. Sailing Foundation coaching clinics will elevate your game and your team's performance. When we all understand the game and perform at a higher level, everyone wins. Taking it to the next level. Getting young people on the water after school is a great thing. We can collectively feel good about providing this kind of healthy opportunity. But that is not enough. Good, effective or inspired coaching changes lives. Competitive sailing is really difficult and requires a substantial commitment of time, expense and physical and mental effort. We owe it to our athletes to be the best coaches we can be. We need to be able to provide the tools, information and skills to allow them to sail consistently to their full potential and enjoy this wonderful sport for life.
